I bought a new 4400 then found this forum the night it was delivered. It has the parking brake on the dash, and one hydaulic cylinder for the front end. Is there somewhere I can call with the serial number to see if the thrust bearing is the new hardend one, the dash lens fixed etc. They told me it was a 2000 model but nothing on any paperwork gives the year. Also any other potential problems I should look for. Anybody out there with a positive experience?

Sparky, I also have a 4400 with 48 backhoe and 430 loader that I bought new in April, 2000. Your 4400 sounds newer than mine because I still have the parking brake down by the seat, not on the dash. The fogging dash fix was in production by the time I bought my tractor and I'm pretty sure the hardened thrust washer/bearing was also. I've used my tractor for about 45 hours of loader work, 20 hours of backhoe working digging boulders, and about 10 hours of PTO mowing both belly finish and rear brush-hog. I've been real happy with this setup and the only real problem I've had is a fuel guage sender that hangs up in the tank, causing me to run dry once. The loader and backhoe work I do is very tough on the machine because it is mostly excavation work in rock-embedded clay soil. I've been spoiled by the capabilities of this setup and how easy it is to attach and detach implements. I also have a great dealership to support me. Count me as a satisfied owner at this point. ....

Thanks for the input Jeff. I have read the archives, made some phone calls, and stopped by the JD dealer and talked to the sales rep and the service manager. I'll cut to the quick. Mine left the factory 5/00. There are no recalls, 1-800-537-3565 ( they tell me ). Also, I was assured by the dealer that as of this mfg date all known bugs ( of any magnitude ? ) are worked out. They were aware of most defects I brought up, and did point out they were on first production runs. But something interesting popped up. They "wondered" if Kubota "people" ( employees ) post on JD sights casting dispersions upon JD products, and, who knows, JD "people" post on Kubota sights and do the same, exagerating or fabricating problems to make the others product look bad. Who knows. Because of a combination of reasons I picked the JD and am going to go forward without worrying about it. I've got lots to do with my 4400 and am going at it with a gusto. BTW, I do like the tractor and didn't want a dark cloud to hang over it. I think I have satisfied that concern to myself.

Sparky, thanks for the info. I don't believe that theory about "fanatics posting lies about the other brands" on these message boards. It's a smokescreen or wishful thinking as far as I'm concerned. It is true that some of us have strong opinions about brands we like or dislike, but those opinions come through pretty obviously when you follow the boards for awhile. And we have our fair share of dealers and employees on the boards also, but at least here on CTB I feel that our participants who are dealers and therefore have a vested financial interest in one brand or another behave pretty professionally and don't fabricate stuff. [That was a compliment, Art, in case you missed it! ;>) ] We have had some instances of BS in the past, but usually the person will not post their email and they disappear from the board after awhile, or else they change their login and clean up their act. ....

Well - I can tell you that I do (unfortunatly) own a 4400. Actually, this is my second 4400 as deere finally replaced it due to sooooo many problems. I have had this 4400 since june 2000 and while it is an improvement over the original, it still has been back a number of times for clutch problems - and has to go back again.
I can see that the posts are for real - because, I have experienced every one of the problems - plus others not mentioned.
I would strongly discourage anyone from purchasing a 4400 or for that matter, a deer compact tractor.

I guess you are having some of the same problems with green I had with blue. I believe it was TomG that said awhile back, you can have a lemon no matter what color you buy, they all produce one from time to time. Sorry to hear about your problems, I know only too well how frustrating that can be. I am impressed that J/D replaced the machine once already, I had to trade mine off to end the headaches. ....

I bought a 4400 in June 1999 and have been extremely pleased with it. The reported scuffing has never been a problem for me. I have a mild case of dash fogging now and then, but it never seems serious enough to worry or complain about. I did have one of the early hydrostatic transmissions that got contaminated by filings, but as soon as the symptoms of that turned up, the dealer replaced it and Deere assumed the entire cost, even though it was past waranty. My 4400 has been a joy to own and work with, and I'd recommend it to anyone, not only because of the way the tractor performs, but for the way the dealers and the Deere company stand behind their product. ....
